Hillsboro Middle School: Principal's Page

HMS Home

July 10, 2010

A Message From the Middle School Administrators:

The Middle School is now located in our new building at 550 US 62S. We have approximately 650 students in grades 6-8. Students are organized by teams. Each grade level has two teams. Teachers specialize in content area and collaborate with the other members of their team to ensure that ALL students have a great experience at HMS.

All students have 4 core classes per day (Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math) and 2 encore classes per day. (P.E., Art, Health, Technology, Choir, Creative Writing, Fine Arts, Project Lead The Way, Spanish, or Specialized Reading) The core offerings are year long and the majority of the encore offerings are 9 weeks.

We hope that you find your browsing of the Hillsboro Middle School web site interesting and helpful. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to e-mail us. You can post suggestions for additions to our web site in the feedback link below.

As you navigate our web site, you will see our bell schedule. Students travel to their encore classes by grade level for an 80 minute span. During that time, they rotate between two classes that change each quarter. By the end of the school year, they have experienced 6-8 different encore courses. During this 80 minute block, core teachers utilize 40 minutes of this time for their personal planning, while the other 40 minutes is scripted. The following is the schedule we use for this time:

Monday: Core Teacher Based Team Meetings

Tuesday: Communication with students and parents - Progress Book updating

Wednesday: Content Teacher Based Team Meetings

Thursday: SSMT

Friday: Math Intervention and Tutoring

Our motto is” EXCELLENCE, Whatever it Takes!” Students and staff come in daily and challenge themselves and each other questing for EXCELLENCE. We have high expectations for all students and staff as we operate under the philosophy that "Failure is Not an Option".

What would you like to see added to the HMS web site?

09/28/2009 I would really like to see the Middle School daily announcements on the website updated each day. Students are not very good about passing information along to parents. Thanks!

12/01/2009 I think that there should be a lunch menu because nobody knows what is for lunch. I also think that they should update the anouncments every day also. Moderator Note: The link for Lunch menus is found on the right-hand panel of every page. High School and Middle School announcemts can be found in by clicking on the appropriate button on the left panel of each High School or Middle School page.

02/01/2010 I would like to see an updated website. The information is outdated and the layout is BORING!

02/10/2010 I think the school closings, delays and early dismissals should be first posted on the schools own site, or at least a feed of the most accurate and current information. Moderator Comment: Since the district main page is the starting point for all the building pages, delays, closings, and other announcements are posted there unless an announcement only applies to a specific building. These announcements are posted as soon as the web administrator recieves the call.

02/26/2010 I would like to see ALL homework from EVERY TEACHER posted like it is suppose to be. It is frustrating to be offered this option and not be able to use it. There have been a few times when this would have been VERY helpful in makeing sure that EVERYTHING is being being done by my child as expected. It would also help me help him with homework. This is also helpful at midterms and at the end of the grading period to see where my child needs help. Also, not one teacher's email(for my child) is available on line through this site. They have not been set up properly so therefore that line of communication is not availabe. Why spend the money and time on resources that are not being used as we have been told they would be. I am not impressed.
