8th Grade Students Explore Careers

On February 26, 2010, nearly 200 eighth grade students at Hillsboro Middle School were given the opportunity to talk with a variety of Career Professionals from over 26 careers clustered within the areas of Arts, Administration & Sales, Business Operation, Technical, Science & Technology careers. The purpose of this event was not to sell a particular career to students but to give them the opportunity to get a real life perspective on potential careers.

In the fall students took the Explore Test (ACT) that included a career placement assessment. The results from this assessment included suggestions for careers that the student may be interested in based on the student’s academic strengths and talents. With this information students were assigned three, thirty minute sessions having the opportunity to have a small group discussion with a Career Professional.

Almost 40 Career Professionals volunteered their time to share a variety of information with the students including salary, education requirements, daily routine, job outlook, the positives as well as the negatives of their career. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and get to know the Career Professionals.
