Plaster Mask

by Ashley Badger

July 27, 2010

Students start this project by researching cultural masks in technology class.  They choose the mask they want to create in art.  Then they find out information about that mask like where does it come from, what is the purpose of the mask and who wears it.  When the students come to class we discuss their research and compare it to how we use mask in the United States.  The students are introduced to the plastering process.  Then they are shown how to change the shape of their mask to look like the one they researched. They do this by forming newspaper or tag board into the shape desired.  Then they plaster the shape and attach it to the original mask template.  This process is not easy and the students spend many classes just forming the mask.  When the shape is complete they paint and add the extra details.
