Students learned about the first fan in China. It was actually used to keep dust and dirt out of the face. It wasn't until later that they used it in the summer to keep cool. Fans became a way of showing social status. The wealthy would commission professional artist to paint on the fans. In class we discussed different ways to draw a dragon. The students chose their favorite form to put on a fan. The students incorporated pattern, design and implied textured. They used colored pencil and permanent markers to color in their drawings.
