2009 Highland County Relay for Life

On Friday June 26th and Saturday June 27th, a team of 24 staff members and their families and friends participated in the 2009 Highland County Relay for Life Event held at the Highland County Fairgrounds. The team raised money to support this annual fundraising event from March through June. Overall the team raised more than $2500.00 through student-involved fundraisers including a staff childhood photo contest and duct taping assembly and through the sale of luminaria bags and personal requests for donations. The Hillsboro Elementary Team qualified as a Silver Level Sponsor due to their exceptional efforts and generous giving.

Raising money for a great cause was not the only positive outcome of the event. The 18 hours of fun that takes place from evening through the night and into the next morning resulted in great teamwork and a lot of smiles and laughter. One of the night's most enlightening events was the Ms. Relay Contest during which Mr. Ewry, the Intermediate Pod Principal, represented our team in complete cross-dressing fashion showing off his feminine side. He not only participated in the contest wearing a long, black, curly wig, full make-up, and an evening gown, he won! He was crowned Ms. Relay 2009! Our team also won the 25th Hour Lap during which walkers found creative ways to incorporate 25 into their apparel.

Another exciting aspect of Hillsboro Elementary that was praised repeatedly throughout the event was our students' help in decorating luminaria bags that were purchased by supporters throughout the county. A total of approximately 600 bags were sold for the event In Honor or In Memory of loved ones fighting or lost due to cancer. Our students decorated almost 2/3 of the bags sold adding some extra color and excitement to this well known American Cancer Society tradition. Students decorated the bags during their enrichment times in the spring under the direction and assistance of the art teachers.

You are encouraged to view pictures of the event to give you an idea of all the fun we had. Also, feel free to ask any of the participating staff members about the experience. Hillsboro Elementary team members included the following individuals and many of their family members and friends: Stacia Burke, Vicki Butler, Penny Carter, Sarah Conn, Gina Early, Lew Ewry, Diana Fields, Nancy Fife, Sandy Ford, Kim Fouch, Tammy Gleadle, Jami Holland, Tricia Howland, Debbie Inlow, Terry McCrory, Darlene Mihalik, Diane Michael, Heather Murphy, Cindy Olds, Pam Pinney, Julie Smith, Marlene Whiting, Kellie Yochum, and Tina Young.

We are planning to have a team again next year so please let us know if you are interested in helping raise money throughout the year or participate in the event next June!
