March Construction Update
March 21, 2009
The new Hillsboro High School / Hillsboro Middle School construction project has continued to progress smoothly during the month of March.
Some of the main differences you will see in the March work includes installation of SMART boards, marker boards, and tack boards. Nearly all areas are painted. Lockers are being installed in the hallway. Temporary heat and electric are now gone from the building. Permanent heat and power are operational.
Ceiling grid is installed in most classrooms and continues to be installed in the hallways. Above ceiling inspection will be happening in early April. Classroom doors are onsite with installation scheduled to begin by April 1st.
Gymnasium equipment is arriving and beginning to be installed. Wood floor installation in the gymnasiums is scheduled to begin by the 2nd week in April.
With spring weather setting in, exterior site work such as sidewalks and ground work is beginning to ramp up.
Do you like what you see?

| 03/28/2009 | I like the idea of a new school but, the colors are all wrong. It seems like we have no school spirit. White and Blue is Washington's color's. Yes red is the color of "hatred" but, all of my friends agree. The school NEEDS MORE RED AND WHITE. |

| 04/01/2009 | I agree with roadz Why is the cafetorium green? Why is gym just white. could we have maybe some more red and some indian symbols? And why do we not get automatic urinals and toilets. Did we run out of money? The middle school's capacity is already 110%. Someone must have misscounted. Good thing I'll be in high school next year. And the acoustics in the cafetorium and vocal rooms will be terrible. We need padding on the walls to soak up the sound. And who was the person who came up with the idea for different shapes for the entryways to the building. We aren't in elementary. I think it looks way unproportinal that way. Maybe we should hire a better designer with school spirit and everyone's interest in mind instead of keeping it cheap.Could we please try pleasing the student's who's parents pay the taxes instead of appealing to the teacher's administrators and other staff. And why waste money on a state of the art kitchen if the cooks don't use them. Everything is instant and taste horrid. How do we expect to get funding with salty greasy and fatty foods. My final comment is the destruction of the old high school. We are so gready that we will destroy a beautiful piece of art because we want more funding. This school is corrupt. |

| 04/09/2009 | First of all, have you seen Peebles High School? They have more spirit than us in their new school and they're the Indians too. Their school colors are red and white. Look at our new school. The most red I see in it, is the front of the library. Ever watched High School Musical? Yeah well in choir we've watched that movie. They're school colors are red and white, and it shows throughout the whole movie. And yes they filmed it in an actual school. Second of all, the whole exterior decorator problem. You should have hired one, or a different one. Prom next year, no grand march because there's no where to walk. What's up with that? Get with the program. If there's no grand march we might as well wear homecoming dresses. The whole new school thing, use to make me excited. Now however, not so much. You should work on pleasing the people who are suppose to spend basically half their lives in that building. |

| 04/14/2009 | The school needs our school mascot on the walls, more white and red. If you want the students to have school spirit, you have to show it. There looks to be a lot of wasted space. The 3 minute time frame to get from one class to the next will have to most likely be changed to at least 5 so everyone can get where they are going on time without being tardy. Other than that, more school spirit is much needed. Moderator Comment: Jess, part this posting had a concern that I have edited out and have passed it along in private to the appropriate school personnel. |

| 04/16/2009 | I check these posts all the time and I'm definately noticing a trend. The colors are concerning everyone. I mean, honestly. Repaint the school. You have over two months do it. No rush. And honestly guys. Those of you who are talking about Grand March and how we won't have a place to have it, the school isn't done yet! After all of the construction is finished, they will have nice parking lots and all kinds of great things out front. No need to have a fit about. We talked about all of this during class today and yeah, the new school sounds cool and all, but all we really need is air conditioning in our current school. You could have saved a TON of money by just installing it. But whatever floats your boat I guess. [Don't tear down HHS! It's a great building that could be so useful in the future!] |

| 04/17/2009 | I do not like the idea of a new school they could add on to the middle and the high school they have now. Alot of adults went here when they were kids now they are tearing this school down instead of doing something with it. They could make it into a senior citizens place, they could make into anything they want they could make alot of money but they won't. I think it is wrong. |

| 04/22/2009 | They could of kept this school. I don't see why you have to build a new one. I heard from teachers that there is not allowed to have red in the school if this is true I think that is wrong that is the school colors. They should have to paint it red and white. Or there should be no reason the students should be called the Hillsboro Indians. They had enough rooms for the kids to be taught I don't see why we needed a new school. They could of fixed the air conditioning and heating and everything would be ok. I don't see how everyone likes the new school if it don't have are school colors. Do not tear down this school, do something with it. |

I understand the locker ordeal...ugh...but jeez...they've not even finished! You'll get to see the final deal during open house, so chill. It's going to look...ugly and un-spirited. | 04/25/2009 | I am so excited for the new school! The only sad thing for me is that by the time i'm a senior some of the final touches on the school won't be done, like the football/soccer field, tennis courts, and baseball and softball fields. Too bad i'll kinda miss out on that stuff...But the school is really shaping up. I noticed that just about every single person who left a comment commented on the school colors. Yes, i realize that we couldn't really have much red because it's "violent". But seriously, have you ever seen a color hurt someone? :) jk. Anyway, i don't really think having a red wall or red Indian painted on the wall is really going to make someone become all ferocious and angry. But hey. that's just me... The library entrance is really cool looking! But i have a question. The library is on the 2nd floor overlooking the cafeterioum right? Well, if you're in the library, and you are trying to work on a project or read a book, wouldn't you hear all the noise that is coming from the people eating lunch below? Because they don't look that far away. And if i was trying to read in peace and quiet, i personally would not want to hear a hundred chatty people every time the library door opens... P.S. Just to let the freaked out people know, i'm pretty sure that the whole thing about no Grand March at the new school is just a rumor. Ask Ms. Pitzer and she'll tell ya! So no worries! |

It's not done yet, they are going to paint the walls. and all we re seeing are the floors and stuff. and why are there 2 floors? i also like the idea of all of having a softball, baseball, multipurpose field, and tennis court. | 04/29/2009 | It's great to see everyone commenting on your new school. My team and I take great pride in building it for you. I can sympathize with some of your concerns but let me assure you that there is plenty of Red and White in all the public areas and you will love all of the great features it has. The 2 large gyms will be awesome and the technology is 2nd to none. The staff will have to keep the blinds closed though, to keep the students from admiring the great views of the hills and wildlife that wander all around the site. If you have any questions, post them and I will try and answer them. |

| 04/29/2009 | i think the school will better in some ways and much much worse in others. For one thing it is way more handicap friendly! But i agree with the people who say you will be deprived of the nice weather and fresh air. I think it will feel like a jail, and thats what people think school is these days! whatever happened to kids being kids? School should be fun. But since all the teachers have to teach to the test, classes aren't fun anymore they are crazy, which makes school seem like a jail. But I think if student talk with the administration about doing something to make the school you own, like painting murals the we have now, and yes putting more red into the building, everyone might be less unhappy about the lack of spirit. |

| 04/30/2009 | I agree with Senior. Most of the time, my school day consists of waiting for the chance to go outside! Fresh and sunlight, some of the best things for our health are definitely lacking at the new school. I also agree with them on their opinion of the school being like a jail. We're not locking potentially harmful people out, we're locking students in. I am quite upset at the fact that this school is made to calm the fears that many parents have from watching too many over reactive media stories. Please consider lightening up, we children are your future, so don't coddle us, we need to grow up and learn to take care of ourselves. |

| 05/01/2009 | I have a question for you Todd Clevinger does the school already feel like a jail house. It sure does look like it. And is there going to be cell phone use down there because one phone will not due for 22 or more kids to use if there is an emergency. Then what do we do die and not let your mother whats going on because you can't. Your parents find out and you was suppose to tell them so you could talk to them one last time? Moderators Comment: Because the building is so large and has so much brick and steel, plus the fact that it sits at the base of a hill, you will find that cell phones do not get very good reception, but there is no cell phone jamming being done. |

| 05/01/2009 | I agree with them. We won't get to go outside we are in the high school now so we don't have resess anymore. Are colors are red and white so us students want that. You're supposed to do what the students want. They could have kept this school instead of going through that kind of stuff. You guys don't want to put no red up because it's supposed to make us angry. Please tell me another one. I never heard anyone say anything about color has any affection like that. It's just color. This school had red and white everywhere it's are school colors. Blanchester has their colors. East Clinton got a new school and it is there colors. So what is wrong with having our colors. Next they are not going to have bathrooms because it's going to be evil. I don't get any of it. |

| 05/04/2009 | To those who are making all of the negative comments, have you even been inside of the new building? Personally, I have, and it is going to be beautiful! My major concern if if the students are going to appreciate and respect it more than they have our current building. It doesn't matter what color the walls are painted if students write on the walls and vandalize other things. I understand that people do not want to see the current building demolished. I too am a graduate of HHS. I have many fond memories of attending classes and working in the building, but, we have to face facts, things change. We have outgrown the current facility. As hard as our technology department has tried to keep us up-to-date, our school is lacking in the technology that our students so desperately need to keep them competitive in this fast-paced world we live in. Our current building is minimally handicapped accessible, and in my opinion, is unsafe in many other ways. Our current heating system is substandard. If we aren't freezing or burning up because the boiler is not heating the building properly in the winter, we are roasting in the near 100 degree un-airconditioned building in the Spring and Fall. In many cases, the outwardly beautiful building we all know and love is crumbling down around us on the inside. We are in the business of education our children, the future of our town, our state, and our country. Don't they deserve all of the advantages that we can give them? If everyone would get down off their soapbox long enough to look at the situation logically, they would realize that nobody wants to see the current building demolished. I also would love to see someone do something with it, but honestly, who can afford the repairs and the upkeep? The cost of just getting it up to code would be monumental! My hope is that instead of all of the constant bashing and name-calling, everyone would try to see what our children are getting in return for the retirement of a fine old building who has served our community well. Just like with the passing of an old friend, the old HHS will live forever in the hearts of those of us who knew her and loved her. |

| 05/04/2009 | Well, I think that everyone has terrible grammar! Except for a select few, to start off. I agree that maybe we could have used the school for something else, but we need something new. It would probably be easier to just go to the new school because HHS is currently not up to code. There have been a lot of children and parents come through this school, but their tax dollars funded our new school and we should appreciate it. It has air conditioning and heating, which is always a problem here. I don't care about school colors that much, but I agree we need some. This school barely has school colors now. So where are you guys getting the idea that its all over?? Prom issues I'm sure will be resolved before next April. There is plenty of time for that. None of you have even been in the new school to judge how it looks, just give it a chance. The whole cell phone thing is ridiculous because we don't need them in school anyway. We are here to learn, not text! Some of you, judging by your grammar, need to pay a little more attention in class anyway!! There will be no having to call your parents to say goodbye. We won't have that problem because we'll be more safe. Thats is also why we have a nurse and phones in both offices for emergency contact. So what if the lockers are a little small, if that is the problem, because no one uses them now, and we will at least have one all to ourselves. Quit being a baby about the whole concept, suck it up and be happy we even get a new school. |

| 05/05/2009 | Kay, Let me assure you that it is not a jail. Detainees wish their jails looked as good as your school. There is more natural lighting through out this building with huge picturesque windows all over not to mention the classrooms. Most people cannot see the front of the building because of it's position to the road but it will be grand and spectacular and it should serve well to have a grand march for your proms. As for the cell phones, the administrator is correct. Some cell phones work fine depending on brand but all cell phones work outside the building. Phones are not being jammed, it's the nature of construction materials. As far as school spirit, there are lots of large empty walls which will serve as a blank canvas for murals to be added which might give the students some sense of participation in their new school. |

| 05/05/2009 | I like the idea of a new school. The one we are in now has no air condition. But i just wish there was a way where we can put the old school to GOOD USE. | 05/07/2009 | I do not think we should have a new school. I think they should just fix this school but since the old school is almost finished then it would be a good idea to go ahead and paint the school red and white so it shows school spirit. At least this school even has the cafe and gym painted red and white and they also have and Indian painted in the gym so I think they should do the same with this new school they are building. |

| 05/11/2009 | After reading comments from all, I would like to say that school spirit is shown by respecting others and your surroundings. We have a wonderful new facility and I am so excited my children will be able to attend. What a wonderful experience that will be. I attended HHS. I have worked in the district for many years. Students, if you really want to show school spirit, take care of the facility and add beauty with murals, outdoor landscaping, and your wonderful personalities. Go to school to be a part of a learning family. Your new school is your new home, only the students can show school spirit, it's not really the walls. At least, I hope not. Enjoy your beautiful new home, it's just like moving into a new beautiful house with all the new technology and views of the countryside. Please be thankful for what you have. Embrace change, it's the only definite we have. |
