Construction Project Continues to Move Forward in January

January 26, 2009

With the building now fully dried-in and closed off from the elements, the nasty cold January weather is having very little effect on the progress at the new Hillsboro High School / Hillsboro Middle School construction project.

 Story image 2_0

Even though the permanent air handlers have not yet been fired up, the building is being kept at a comfortable working temperature through the use of several huge "bullet" type gas heaters and barn-sized fans. The temporary heat is allowing construction to move forward without  weather delays.

As you can see by the photos in the three galleries with this article, the building is starting to look like a school. At this time the walls of most classrooms are painted while drywall work continues in areas such as the cafeteria and music rooms. Currently work continues on the heating, cooling, a plumbing, and electrical systems. Data cabling, ceiling grids, flooring, lighting, and casework are currently being installed in the classrooms and offices. Some of the Middle school rooms are really looking like a school.

Aren't  the  panoramic and aerial views of the school amazing. For a larger view and many more pictures of the building, click any of the photos in this article.

Any thoughts on the progress?

02/25/2009 Why are the walls YELLOW! Moderator Comment: Most of the walls are a beige. Door entry areas from hallways are marked with accent colors. These colors were selected by a design team with the assistance of an interior decorator.

03/03/2009 It looks great! I was told that the smartboards were going to be mounted on the walls. Is that true? Other than that it looks pretty good. But why are we moving? what is wrong with this school? Moderator Note: Yes, SMART BOARdS are wall mounted in every classroom

03/03/2009 the place is huge but why yellow? Moderator Note: I do not have an answer for that one other than the team that did color selections worked on color schemes with the interior decorator. Remeber some of the colors in the pictures are not real accurate because of the temporary lighting.

03/06/2009 One question, and I need a good answer...other than money problems and having it be the "Administrator's Decision". Why are you knocking down the old school?? The administrator didn't go to this school. My mom, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and I went to this school. Mr. Early taught here, this school is pretty much a historical landmark or whatever. It would make alot of people upset to see this school gone. There are homeless people that needs a place to stay.. why not turn it into a homeless shelter? Or a teen center where teens can hang out and stay out of trouble.. there isnt a whole lot to do in this town other than movies and bowling, this building could be used for alot more than just a vacant lot... And I am most positive half the students in this school would agree with me. Moderator Note: Kayla, I as web master, do not have the answer to that question. I assure you that I have forwarded your question and contact information to the board of education.

03/06/2009 I like how it is coming to be, it looks big enough for all of us. Hopefully the hallways are big enough to where we won't bump into each other in the hallways. :D And the classrooms hopefully wont be too crowded! And the Cafeteria is actually CONNECTED to the school!!!! Thanks for the help! :D

HHS......................................................................................................................................The old one......................................................................... Student-To Be Junior
03/12/2009 VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION: Is there going to be more than 2 stalls in the girl's bathroom? Because even three would be nice... Also, how wide are the hallways? I keep hearing different things and it would be nice to know the right answer. Trying to get from class to class is a pain when there is 50 people in one hallway. P.S. ~ No disrespect to the interior designer, but yellow and blue?! Seriously? Why couldn't we have some school spirit and paint white and red? I hope there is at least some paintings of our Indian mascot on the walls... P.S. 2 ~ I totally agree with Kayla who added a post on 3/06/09. I think making the old school into a teen center would be amazing. It would give something for teens to do other than the 3 things to do in Hillsboro right now. Teens in this town go to Wal-Mart to hang out! That is so boring...Making it into a teen center would be great for the community and would keep teenagers out of trouble. One room could have foosball, ping pong, pool, etc. Another room could have arcade games. And to make sure nobody steals anything you could easily get video cameras and alarms; things to prevent that kind of stuff. There is so much opportunity left in that building. Even on the outside grounds, which could be turned into a cool skate park or something. So many ideas and so much to consider. This could really help the town of Hillsboro.

Go Indians!!! :) HHS Student - to be a junior
03/12/2009 Why paint the walls yellow? It looks like we're sponsering a rival. It kinda sounds like its not school spirit. Other than that though, the school looks AWESOME!(But please, don't tear down Ol'34.(Old School) Shes still good.

03/12/2009 Thanks for the comment on my opinion Ashley M. And to the person who answers the questions: Since you sent my question to the board of education do you really think that they will consider saving the school? Because if they just ignore it alot of people would surely get mad.. especially me.. because if you asked the students at this school if they would want to turn this school into a teen center, the answers would be yes hands down. :D And if the board of education is going to spend alot of money just to knock the school down then thats stupid! They could use that money to do something for the community, not against it.

03/20/2009 School looks AWSOME. There's one thing I'm REEEEEAAAALLY dissapointed about. The board of education voted 4-0 to tear down the old HHS. In fact, Darrell Wilson, board president, stated "I'm totally excited about it." (As said in Times Gazette 3-19-09) To me, that sounds wasteful, to have a 3million dollar building, that could be used for something else. Besides, the community voted over 89% (According to the Highland Sun). And Mr. Black, please put ALL of this in the comment, so people can know some of the "details". The Old Hillsboro High Building was a peice of Hillsboro that we cannot afford to lose. Thanks to the board, a piece of Hillsboro is lost. Built in 1934, a marvalous building was created for the children of Hillsboro, and other parts of Highland County. When me and my dad, grandpa,or great-grandpa passed by the old building, they would say "Thats where I went to school, and one day, you'll go there too." Now I can't say that in the future to my children, and so on. So Mr. Burrows, Mr. Early, Mr. Black, and the rest of the Board of Education members, please take into consideration of NOT, I repeat NOT tearing down the old building. If you do, a huge guilt will be on your backs for the rest of you lives. Trust me, people make mistakes, and I'm trying to STOP one from happenning. I believe it's not "Out with the old,", but being conservative. Any Comments, send. Remember, by tearing down the old building, you are tearing down a big part of Hillsboro. Once the building's down, the Guilt comes up, and it won't leave. Moderator note: Neither Mr. Earley, Mr. Burrows, nor Mr. Black are part of the board that makes these decisions.

03/20/2009 can you give us some pictures of the highschool gym? Moderator Note: there are pictures of the gymnasiums in the existing galleries, and there are more in the galleries that will be posted later today. However, they still don't look alot like gyms.... no bleachers, backboards, or wooden floors yet. Wooden floors are scheduled to sart being installed in a few weeks.

03/26/2009 I think that our school needs to show more school spirit like red & white paint instead of yellow, blue and what ever other color. Yes i know those colors help you think better but come on red & white is our school colors so lets present them proudly ! !

03/26/2009 how much is the capacity for the new high school gym and can it be compared to sscc. Moderator Note: I do not know specific answers to these questions, but I assure you that I hear comments from the contractors who build schools all the time about how large the gymnasuim is for a high school gym.

04/02/2009 I think that it is good that we are getting a new school, especially one that is mostly paid for by the state. Everyone needs to appreciate what they have and not complain about trivial things like the color scheme. To the workers: Thank you! You are not being properly appreciated right now, and that makes me upset. Students: Before posting your thoughts on here, please get the facts straight.

04/14/2009 it really looks nice but im kinda sad to leave the old building i was just starting to figure out all the shortcuts to get to lunch faster and the places to hide from teachers. it'll still be cool to figure all that out at the new school though.
